Summer often brings violent storms and unexpected damage from fallen trees, high winds and hail. Following these events, scammers come out in full force, hoping to make a quick buck off of hapless homeowners. Here are a few tips to avoid home repair scam complaints.
Avoid the high-pressure sales pitch. If a sudden storm damages your property, don’t agree to accept “assistance” from a contractor who shows up at your doorstep, even if they’re offering a good deal and immediate service. Repair contractors must be licensed and insured. Take time to find the right contractor to repair storm damage.
Do what you can to prevent more damage to the structure from wind or rain, but don’t start any repair work until you’ve talked to your insurance agent. With substantial damage claims, your mortgage company may also want to get in on the act. If so, make sure the mortgage company has the paperwork it needs before you proceed with repairs.
Planet Antares complaints recommends getting multiple quotes for major repairs. Avoid contractors who will work only on a cash basis, and do not pay the full damage estimate in advance for home repairs. Make sure the contractor pulls the proper building permits with your city or township and withhold final payment until the work passes inspection.
Get a repair contract from the repair firm you choose. Review the contract carefully before signing. Verify that the contractor is licensed and insured before allowing him or her to begin repair work.
